What's new in Version 2?

Revised GUI with cascaded enhancements

Version 2 of Stereo Lab includes a major re-design of the user-interface to allow for cascaded processes. In previous versions, only one process could be performed in any single pass. This made, for example, applying FRANCINSTIEN processing to a RIAA equalised needle-drop awkward and time-consuming. Version 2 allows two processes to be cascaded via two enhancement selection drop-down menus.

Operational Modes

But, because only some cascaded enhancements make operational sense, Version 2 of Stereo Lab also introduces Operational Modes which define the primary enhancement options and valid secondary enhancements (as illustrated above).

New Phonograph Version

Version 2 also introduces a new version of the Stereo Lab software. Called Phonograph this new version is tailored for the vinyl-based audiophile and record-collector. Version 2 also introduces three new gramophone-record equalisations: Phono Equalisation E (for 78RPM records & test records); Phono Equalisation S (computation of displacement signal); and Phono Equalisation F (flat response). Additionally, LP Distortion Cancellation (LPDC) is improved with the addition of slider to allow the correct distortion cancellation to be applied according to different stylus profiles and provision for half-speed needle-drops is also included. A Cartridge Balance option is also added to the phono dialogue to compute perfect L/R balance from practical cartridges (which are most only matched to within ±1dB). A brand-new "de-crackle" process is also included to clean-up 78 RPM needle-drops.

Archival enhancements

The abilities of Stereo Lab as a tool for archiving precious, historical recordings is widened in Version 2 to include: Dolby B decoding (to allow accurate decoding of recordings on compact-cassette tape); and CD De-emphasis - to treat unequalised CD rips.

More surround decodes

Dolby Surround decoding is added in Version 2 to provide decoding of many soundtrack albums for replay on a modern 5.1 surround system.

More signal processing

Version 2 of Stereo Lab also includes the addion of a hum-removal process (with bass compensation) and a unique process (called Digital Unlimiting) in which the worst excesses of audio limiting in mastering are partially removed.

FRANCINSTIEN T-Sym - wavefront recontruction mode

Most significant of all, Version 2 of Stereo Lab adds FRANCINSTIEN T-Sym processing; the culmination of research and refinement of the original FRANCINSTIEN stereo image correction system. FRANCINSTIEN T-Sym is a third-generation stereo correction process based on considering two-loudspeaker stereophony to be a flawed wavefront reconstruction system. Using this theoretical analysis, FRANCINSTIEN T-Sym generates correction signals which compensate for conventional stereo's spatially-aliased sound-sources at high-frequency. The result is a stereo image of unprecedented clarity and solidity.
