| This feature may be in a future release of Stereo Lab |

This feature was be added to development requests Stereo Lab after a conversation with Yip Mang Meng in Singapore who owns a Cogent Research Simultaneous Polyphonic Isolator which he believes is a sadly untrodden byway of audio history and something of a lost opportunity.
In fact, it's unknown exactly what the curiously named Cogent Research unit does, but we believe it is (in effect) an Ambisonics UHJ decoder with four outputs for speakers at 22.5°, 45°, 315° and 337.5° (in other words, 45° and 22.5° left and right of centre). Such a decoder is totally compatible with Ambisonics theory and Yip reports that such a decoder works quite well with standard stereo recordings; especially when panned or recorded with coincident microphones.
If this feature is added, access to this new Ambisonics decoding option will be via the dropdown Ambisonics decode type in the Settings menu. In terms of the output files, we have simply mapped Lcf (left-centre-front) and Rcf (right-centre front) onto Lb Rb respectively.
The required loudspeaker layout looks like this:
